In this collage, I experimented with the idea of two musical universes colliding and interchanging forces. I chose two great Iranian tenors, Maestro GholamHossein Banan, a traditional music legend, and Fereydoon Forooghi, a famous rock singer. Banan’s voice is velvety and flows like a river, while Forooghi’s has a strong, sturdy presence. Both pieces have a a gloomy, haunting and doomsday feeling to them, but the orchestra and rock band have clear contrasts in their timbre and characters. The traditional music has an iconic melody written by Morteza Mahjoobi, a brilliant self-taught pianist and composer. The rock song, is a cover of Ray Charles’ tune, who was one of Forooghi’s main inspirations in his early works.
